History

1984
The Airport Authority Act 1984 passed by Parliament with the Airport under the Civil Aviation department of the Ministry of Transport.
New Terminal Building donated by the Government of Japan.

1985
 Faleolo runway was upgraded and expanded to 2700 meters to cater for 747 operations.
1986
The Airport Authority was separated from the Ministry of Transport as a State Enterprise.
1987
First Instrument Landing System (ILS) for runway 08 donated by the Government of Japan, was installed at Faleolo International Airport.
1990
 Asau airstrip was destroyed by Cyclone Ofa.
1992
Fagalii Airport was declared as a Custom Port of Entry.
1994
Maota Airport was tar sealed and extended to 700 meters.
1997
Maota was declared a Custom Port of Entry.

2000
Faleolo runway was resealed and extended by 300 metres. A new Control Tower, RFS Station and two (2) new fire Tenders were commissioned. Car park and terminal building upgrade were completed.
2002
Shares for the SAA at Aggies Resort and Spa were acquired. VIP Building was completed.
2003
Multipurpose Hall completed Fagalii airport was closed down.
2004
New Instrument Landing System bought from Alenia Marconi was commissioned.
2005
Agreement with Penina Golf was signed. PolyBlue Airline started its operations in October.
2007
New upper car park and water fountain for Faleolo International Airport were opened.
2008
The New Zealand Aviation Security services through Pacific Security fund donated a second hand Vehicle to be used by the Aviation Security at Faleolo.
2009
SAA Training Room completed(Converted to SAIP Office July 2014).

The review of the Samoa Airport Authority Act was awarded to Leung Wai Law Firm.

The New Zealand Aviation Security services donated another second-hand vehicle for Security patrols and Security related activities.

 A dividend of $100,000 was received from Aggies Resort and Spa.

2010
SAA formed a Joint Venture with Oceania Aviation Services to provide a second ground
handling services operator at Faleolo International Airport.

 One Fire tender (truck) returned from being fully refurbished by Aviation Fire Services of New Zealand, with a new 12 seater life raft acquired also.

A second dividend of $100,000 was received from Aggies Resort and Spa.
2011
The new Cargo Building was completed in September.
2012
The Samoa Airport Authority Act 2012 came into effect.

The Water Fountain was removed due to car park expansion.
2013
Departure tax was incorporated into the price of Airline tickets.
2014
Completion of new and improved VIP Fales for use.

An integrated Safety Management System (SMS) incorporating Finance, Occupational
Health and Safety was implemented.                             

New vinyl Security perimeter fence installed on seaside of runway.

 Carpark ticketing system was implemented.                             

World Bank Samoa Aviation Investment Project to improve safety and security of airport
infrastructures became effective in August.  

Terminal Upgrades in preparation for the United Nations SIDs Conference held in August.

Rescue Fire and Security Services upgraded for utilization in the SIDs preparations.
2015
Ground-breaking in July for Airport new Terminal building.
2018
Opening of new terminal built by Shanghai Constructions Group.

Opening of EOC (Emergency & Operations Center) and Mechanical Workshop.
2019
Aerobridges commenced operations.

Tiavea Airport construction commenced.
2020
COVID-Pandemic

Borders Officially Reopening since COVID Pandemic.
2023
Fagalii Airport Reopening.
